The Grand Cherokee sold from 2020 to 2024 is really two vehicles. The 2020 and 2021 two-row models are the older WK2 design. The WL design arrived first as the three-row Grand Cherokee L for 2021, then as the new two-row Grand Cherokee for 2022. NHTSA also lists a 2022 Grand Cherokee WK, a carryover of the older design, so read the VIN and the build sticker and do not guess from the model year alone.
The WK2 is a proven design with a Pentastar V6, Hemi V8s and the high-output SRT and Trackhawk. The WL is newer and has had many recalls in its first years, on rear coil springs, the front upper ball joint, air bag software and the rearview camera. Most are free fixes, but several are still being rolled out in 2026.
The 4xe plug-in hybrid needs the most care. It is covered by a high-voltage battery fire recall that tells owners to park outside and not charge until repaired, plus recalls for loss of drive power. Edmunds kept a 2023 4xe for about 24,000 miles and said it would not buy one again after three breakdowns.
A used Grand Cherokee can be a good buy when its recalls are closed and its records are clean. The VIN recall check matters more on this SUV than on most.
- 3.6L Pentastar V6
- 5.7L Hemi V8
- 6.4L V8 (2020 to 2021 SRT)
- 6.2L supercharged V8 (2020 to 2021 Trackhawk)
- 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (listed by NHTSA on some 2020 models)
- 2.0L turbo 4-cyl plug-in hybrid (4xe, 2022 and later)
WK2 (2020 to 2021) and WL (2022 to 2024, plus the three-row Grand Cherokee L from 2021), sold as model years 2020–2024.
| Engine | Years | Transmission | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.6L Pentastar V6 | 2020–2024 | 8-speed automatic (TorqueFlite 8HP70) | Standard on most WK2, WL and Grand Cherokee L trims. |
| 5.7L Hemi V8 | 2020–2024 | 8-speed automatic (TorqueFlite 8HP70) | Optional on 4x4 models. On the two-row WL, Jeep's spec sheets list it for 2022 but not 2023 or 2024. It stays on the Grand Cherokee L. |
| 6.4L V8 | 2020–2021 | 8-speed automatic (TorqueFlite 8HP70) | Standard on the WK2 SRT. |
| 6.2L supercharged V8 | 2020–2021 | 8-speed automatic (TorqueFlite 8HP95) | Standard on the WK2 Trackhawk. |
| 2.0L turbo plug-in hybrid (4xe) | 2022–2024 | 8-speed plug-in hybrid automatic (8P75PH) | Two-row WL only. Jeep lists a 17.3 kWh battery and 375 hp combined. Edmunds cites an EPA electric range of 26 miles. |

- Laredo The entry trim on both the WK2 and WL, with the 3.6L V6.
- Limited A step up in comfort. On the WK2 and the Grand Cherokee L it could have the 5.7L V8.
- Trailhawk The off-road trim. Jeep's 2023 and 2024 gas V6 spec sheets for the two-row WL do not list a Trailhawk, while the 2022 sheet lists both gas and 4xe versions.
- Overland A luxury-leaning trim, sold with the V6, the V8 or as a 4xe depending on year and body.
- Summit and Summit Reserve The top luxury trims of the WL, with bigger wheels and more features.
- SRT and Trackhawk High-output WK2 models for 2020 and 2021 with a 6.4L V8 or a 6.2L supercharged V8.
- Grand Cherokee L The three-row WL, sold from the 2021 model year with the V6 or the 5.7L V8.
- 2020 to 2021 (WK2, gas) The older WK2 design has far fewer recalls in these years than the new WL. Most 2021 recalls in NHTSA's list name the new Grand Cherokee L, while the 2021 WK is named in the EGR valve recall 22V-284.
- 2024 (WL, gas V6) Most of the large WL suspension and steering recalls (24V-132, 23V-352 and the rear spring recalls) cover 2021 to 2023, not 2024. It still has its own recalls, so check the VIN.
- 2022 4xe It carries the battery fire recall, the engine shutdown recall 23V-412 and the loss of power recall 25V-576, plus the WL suspension recalls.
- 2023 4xe It adds the engine debris recall 25V-766 to the battery fire and power loss recalls. Edmunds' long-term 2023 4xe was towed three times.
- 2021 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 to 2023 WL These first WL years carry the rear coil spring, upper ball joint and steering shaft recalls, and the newest spring recall 26V-562 has no final fix yet.
Picked from the recalls, bulletins and NHTSA complaint records below, not from a reliability rating. Any single car can be better or worse than its year.
NHTSA recall 24V-720 said the high-voltage battery in 2022 to 2024 Grand Cherokee 4xe models may fail inside and cause a fire while parked or driving. It was replaced by recall 25V-741, which now covers 2022 to 2026 4xe models. Owners are told to park outside, away from buildings, and not to charge until the fix is done. Dealers update battery software and replace the battery pack if needed. Vehicles fixed under the first recall need the new remedy too.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls 24V-720 and 25V-741, ask for proof the newest remedy was done, scan the hybrid system for stored faults and test that the vehicle charges.

Three recalls cover the 4xe powertrain. Recall 23V-412 says 2022 models can shut the engine down when two control modules stop talking. Recall 25V-576 says a hybrid control software error on 2022 to 2026 models can cut drive power. Recall 25V-766 says debris inside the engine of some 2023 to 2025 4xe models can cause engine failure, loss of power or an engine bay fire. For that one, dealers update software and replace the block or engine as needed, and NHTSA says more letters will follow once the final fix is ready.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls 23V-412, 25V-576 and 25V-766, scan all modules for fault codes, and road test in hybrid and electric modes while listening for engine noise.

Edmunds ran a 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe for 18 months and about 24,000 miles. It was towed three times: once for a dead 12-volt battery with bad cells, once for a pushed-out harness terminal and a damaged wire that caused limp mode, and once for a loose parking assist module connector. All repairs were under warranty. Edmunds said it would not buy the car again.
WE CHECK We scan every module for stored and history codes, test the 12-volt battery, check for warning lights on a road test, and read the service history for repeat electrical visits.
Recall 24V-132 covers 2022 and 2023 Grand Cherokee and 2021 to 2023 Grand Cherokee L models. The upper control arm ball joint and steering knuckle can separate and let the wheel fall outward. Dealers replace the upper control arm pinch bolts. Recall 24V-131 covers a small number of 2024 models with a badly machined steering knuckle, which dealers replace.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for recalls 24V-132 and 24V-131, look at the front suspension on a lift and road test for clunks or wander.

Rear coil springs on 2021 to 2023 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 to 2023 Grand Cherokee models may be installed wrong and come off while driving. The first recall, 23V-413, was replaced by 26V-051. A newer recall, 26V-562, filed in September 2026, covers about 328,000 vehicles including the 4xe. Dealers will replace the lower spring isolators, and NHTSA says interim letters go out in late September 2026 with more letters once the final fix is available.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for recalls 23V-413, 26V-051 and 26V-562, look at both rear springs and seats on a lift, and note any open item the seller must close.

Several air bag recalls apply. Recall 21V-873 says wrong software in some 2021 Grand Cherokee L models could turn off the front and knee air bags without warning. Recall 26V-328 covers 2022 to 2026 Grand Cherokee and 2023 to 2025 Grand Cherokee L models whose side air bags may deploy late. Smaller recalls covered loose side air bag connectors (24V-897) and missing bumper foam on a few 2024 models (24V-346).
WE CHECK We check the VIN for these recalls, confirm the air bag warning light comes on at start and then goes out, and scan the restraint module for codes.

The WL has many recalls where the backup camera image may not show. They include 23V-577 (park assist software), 24V-289 (a loose camera cable), 24V-944 (2024 camera software) and 25V-083 (an overheating center screen on some 2021 and 2022 models). The 2020 WK2 was also part of camera recall 20V-191.
WE CHECK We shift into reverse several times with the engine warm and cold to confirm the image shows every time, and check the VIN for open camera recalls.

Recall 23V-352 says a wrongly assembled steering column shaft on 2022 and 2023 Grand Cherokee and 2021 to 2023 Grand Cherokee L models may come apart and cause loss of steering. Recall 22V-154 covered a steering rack bar on some 2022 models that was not hardened enough and could bind.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for recalls 23V-352 and 22V-154, feel for binding or play at the wheel and listen for clunks while turning.

Recall 22V-284 says the EGR valve may stick open on some 2021 Grand Cherokee WK, 2022 Grand Cherokee and 2021 and 2022 Grand Cherokee L models with the 3.6L V6. That can cause a sudden loss of power. Dealers replace the EGR valve.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for recall 22V-284, scan for engine codes and road test for stumbling or power loss.
SOURCE NHTSA recall 22V-284
NHTSA lists some 2020 Grand Cherokee models with the 3.0L diesel. Recall 22V-406 says the high pressure fuel pump can fail and send debris through the fuel system, causing a loss of power. Dealers replace the pump and other fuel parts as needed. Recall 23V-411 says the crank sensor tone wheel can come apart and stall the engine. The fix is a software update.
WE CHECK If the Jeep is a diesel, we check the VIN for recalls 22V-406 and 23V-411, scan for fuel and timing codes and read the records for fuel system work.

- Road test for steering play, clunks, power loss and harsh shifts.
- Written proof of every recall repair, especially the newest ones: 25V-741 on a 4xe, and 26V-051 and 26V-562 for the rear springs.
- On a 4xe, dealer records of hybrid software updates, battery checks and any tow-ins or limp mode visits.
- Oil changes on time and with the right oil for the 3.6L, 5.7L or 2.0L turbo.
- 8-speed transmission service if the owner towed or drove hard.
- Any 12-volt battery replacements, since repeat battery trouble can point to a deeper electrical issue.
- On a diesel, proof of the fuel pump recall 22V-406 and the tone wheel software update 23V-411.
Each year has its own guide. The engines, the transmission, and what changed that year.
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.
