The third generation Rogue arrived for 2021 with a new body, a nicer cabin and more safety tech. It is one of the best selling small SUVs in the country, so there are plenty of used ones, many from rental and fleet use.

The 2021 Rogue has a 2.5L four cylinder. For 2022 Nissan swapped in a 1.5L turbo three cylinder with variable compression, called the VC-Turbo, and a new CVT. Nissan says the new engine makes 201 horsepower and gets better fuel economy.

That VC-Turbo engine is the big thing to know. NHTSA lists recalls for engine bearing failure and, on 2024 models, for throttle body gears that may break. Nissan also extended the engine warranty on these engines to 10 years or 120,000 miles. On any 2022 to 2024 Rogue, proof of the recall work matters a lot.

VC-Turbo engine bearingsCostly

NHTSA recall 25V-437 says the engine bearings in Rogues with the 1.5L VC-Turbo may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine failure, and a bearing failure can breach the block and cause an oil fire. The fix is an engine computer update. Recall 26V-080, from February 2026, covers 2023 to 2025 Rogues. It says high temperatures can break down the oil and seize the bearings. Dealers update the software, check for codes, may inspect the oil pan for metal, and replace the engine if needed, all free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls, scan for engine codes, listen for knocking at idle and under load, and ask for dealer records of the recall work.

Engine warranty extensionVerify

Nissan extended coverage on the VC-Turbo long block to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first. CarComplaints.com reported the extension in August 2025 for 2021 to 2024 Rogues with this engine, and in March 2026 for 2023 to 2025 Rogues. It moves with the car to the next owner, and repaired or replaced engines keep the extended coverage.

WE CHECK We read the service records and check the VIN for recall work so you know what coverage should still apply. Confirm the exact coverage for the VIN with a Nissan dealer.

Throttle body gears, 2024Safety

NHTSA recall 26V-081 covers 2024 and 2025 Rogues with the 1.5L VC-Turbo. Gears in the electronic throttle body may break, which can cause a loss of drive power. Dealers update the engine computer and replace the throttle body if needed, free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for an open recall, scan for throttle codes, and road test for sudden power loss.

Fuel pump, 2021Safety

NHTSA recall 21V-957 covers certain 2021 Rogues. Wear inside the fuel pump may make it overheat and fail, which can stall the engine. Dealers replace the fuel pump for free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for an open recall and road test for hesitation or stalling.

Rear brake calipers, 2021Safety

NHTSA recalls 21V-286 and 23V-791 cover certain 2021 Rogues. The rear brake calipers may be missing an internal bushing, which lets brake fluid leak and reduces braking. Dealers inspect and replace calipers as needed, free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls, look for brake fluid at the rear wheels, and test the brakes.

Rearview camera and screenSafety

Several recalls affect the camera image. Recall 22V-772 says the infotainment screen on certain 2021 and 2022 Rogues may keep rebooting on restart, leaving no rearview image. Recall 22V-527 covers some 2021 and 2022 rental Rogues. Recall 24V-748 says a software error may leave the camera screen blank in reverse on certain 2024 and 2025 Rogues.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls and test the rearview camera and screen several times during the inspection.

Rear seat beltsSafety

NHTSA recall 22V-666 says the rear left and right seat belts on certain 2021 and 2022 Rogues may not retract properly. Recall 23V-374 covers certain 2023 Rogues whose rear belt anchor bolts may not have been tightened. Recall 24V-156 covers some 2023 Rogues with front belt pretensioners that may not restrain correctly.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls and pull out and release every seat belt to check that it retracts and latches.

CVT coverageVerify

Every Rogue in this generation uses a CVT. Nissan's well known extension to 84 months or 84,000 miles on CVTs applies to 2014 to 2018 Rogues, not this generation. Nissan says the 2022 Rogue got a new generation CVT. We found no recall or warranty extension for the CVT in the 2021 to 2024 Rogue.

WE CHECK We road test for shudder, slipping, whining or a CVT warning light, scan the transmission computer for codes, and read records for CVT fluid service.

Focus points
  • Check the VIN for open recalls, especially the VC-Turbo engine and throttle body recalls.
  • Listen for engine knock or rattle on a cold start and under load.
  • Scan the engine and transmission computers for stored and pending codes.
  • Road test for CVT shudder, slipping or whine, and for any sudden loss of power.
  • Test the rearview camera and infotainment screen for reboots or a blank image.
  • Check every seat belt for proper retraction and latching.
  • Look for brake fluid leaks at the rear wheels on 2021 models.
  • Read the service records for oil changes and recall work.
What to look for in the service records
  • Dealer records for engine recalls 25V-437, 26V-080 and, on 2024 models, 26V-081.
  • Any engine repair or replacement, which keeps the extended engine coverage.
  • Oil changes on time with the correct oil, since the recalls involve oil breaking down and bearing wear.
  • CVT fluid service and any CVT software updates.
  • Recall work for the fuel pump and rear brake calipers on 2021 models.

Common service bulletins (TSBs)

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:

Engine & DrivabilityWe check

Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.

Power Train · AutomaticWe check

Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.

Electrical & BodyWe check

Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.

Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.

Recall 26V-080 covers 2023 to 2025 Rogues where hot oil can break down and damage the bearings. Dealers update the software, inspect the engine, and replace it if needed, free.
Does the Rogue have an extended engine warranty?
Yes, for the VC-Turbo engine. Nissan extended coverage on the long block to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, and it transfers to the next owner. Confirm coverage for your VIN with a Nissan dealer.
Does the 2021 Rogue have the VC-Turbo engine?
No. The 2021 Rogue has a 2.5L four cylinder. Nissan switched to the 1.5L VC-Turbo three cylinder for 2022.
Is the CVT in the 2021 to 2024 Rogue covered by the old warranty extension?
No. The 84 month or 84,000 mile CVT extension applies to 2014 to 2018 Rogues. This generation has the normal powertrain warranty, so a road test and records check on the CVT matter.
