The fifth generation Tahoe arrived for 2021 with a new body, independent rear suspension and a roomier third row. It is a big three row SUV that buyers pick for space, towing and V8 power.
There are three engines: a 5.3L V8, a 6.2L V8 and a 3.0L Duramax diesel six. All of them use a 10-speed automatic. The engine matters a lot here, so confirm which one a Tahoe has by the VIN.
The biggest item is GM's 2025 recall of 6.2L V8 engines for crankshaft and connecting rod defects, and NHTSA is still investigating failures after the fix. Lifter trouble and engine replacement programs touch the V8s too. The 2021 model year also has the most recalls by far, from the fuel pump module to the rear driveshafts. Police pursuit Tahoes are not covered here.
- 5.3L V8 (L84)
- 6.2L V8 (L87)
- 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel I6
Fifth generation (2021 to 2024), sold as model years 2021–2024.
| Engine | Years | Transmission | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.3L V8 (L84) | 2021–2024 | 10-speed automatic | The most common engine. 2021 lifter bulletin and a 2024 engine block contamination program. |
| 6.2L V8 (L87) | 2021–2024 | 10-speed automatic | Engines built March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024 are in recall 25V-274. NHTSA's EA26-005 is still open. |
| 3.0L Duramax diesel I6 | 2021–2024 | 10-speed automatic | 2021 diesels are in rear wheel lockup recall 24V-797, and some diesels in fuel tank recall 25V-619. |
- LS The base trim.
- LT The volume trim with more comfort features.
- RST Sporty look. The 6.2L was offered on it.
- Z71 Off-road trim with its own front end and four wheel drive.
- Premier Upscale trim with leather and more tech.
- High Country The top trim. The 6.2L was offered on it.
- 2022 4 recalls in NHTSA's data, against 16 for 2021, and 190 owner complaints, the fewest of the first three years. A 6.2L built in the recall window is still in 25V-274, and 10-speed recall 26V-085 applies to some.
- 2024 The fewest owner complaints (67) and recalls (3). It is also the newest year, so it has had less time to collect complaints. Check the 6.2L recall and, on 5.3L trucks, the engine block contamination program.
- 2021 The first year has the most recalls (16) and the most owner complaints (454, with 168 coded to the engine). It has the lifter bulletin for early builds, the fuel pump module, rear driveshaft, power steering, fuel tank and many seat belt recalls.
- 2023 224 owner complaints, more than 2022, with engine the top area (120). It has the 6.2L oversized lifter bore program, the rear suspension bolt recall and the brake fluid warning recall.

GM recalled certain 2021 to 2024 Tahoes with the 6.2L V8 (the L87) because the connecting rods or crankshaft can have manufacturing defects that lead to engine failure (recall 25V-274). GM's filing covers 44,814 Tahoes with engines built from March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024. Tahoes with the 5.3L, the diesel, or a 6.2L built outside that window are not in the recall. Dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed. Engines that pass get thicker oil, a new oil fill cap and filter, and an owner's manual insert. GM also added special coverage N252494003 for engine failure from this condition on recalled vehicles, for 10 years or 150,000 miles from the in service date. NHTSA is still looking at it. EA25-007, opened October 2025, covers L87 failures outside the recall, and lists 2021 and 2024 Tahoes. EA26-005, opened August 20, 2026, covers failures after the recall fix and engines built after the window. NHTSA counted 499 complaints of failure after the fix.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for recall 25V-274 and which remedy was done, confirm the correct oil and fill cap, listen for knocking from a cold start, scan for engine codes, and read the records for any engine replacement.

GM bulletin 23-NA-043 covers 2021 Tahoes with the 5.3L or 6.2L built from September 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. It says a lifter can collapse or come apart and cause misfires and poor running, and tells dealers how many lifters to replace. GM program N232413430 covered certain 2023 Tahoes with the 6.2L whose lifter bores may be oversized, and the dealer replaced the engine. Program N242455301 covered certain 2024 Tahoes with the 5.3L that may have contamination in the engine block, also with an engine replacement. Both programs had end dates (May 31, 2026 and September 30, 2026), so ask whether the work was done. Engine was the top complaint area for every year in NHTSA's data, for example 168 of 454 complaints for 2021 and 120 of 224 for 2023.
WE CHECK We scan for misfire codes, listen for ticking or knocking at idle and on the road test, and look in the records for lifter work or an engine replacement.

NHTSA recall 24V-797 covers certain 2021 Tahoes with the diesel engine. A worn transmission control valve can lock up the rear wheels. Dealers install new transmission software, and GM special coverage N242454441 covers repair of a bad valve found by that software for 15 years or 150,000 miles from the in service date. Recall 26V-085 covers certain 2022 Tahoes with the 10-speed and electronic shifter (ETRS), with the same kind of software fix, and special coverage N252536751 adds the same 15 years or 150,000 miles. GM lists harsh shifting, a service engine soon message, reduced power or code P0747 as signs of the worn valve.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for both recalls, scan the transmission for P0747 and other codes, and road test for harsh or odd shifts.

NHTSA recall 21V-455 covers certain 2021 Tahoes whose power steering can cut out at startup or while driving because of a software issue. Recall 21V-579 covers certain 2021 Tahoes whose brake control module may have been set up wrong by a dealer, which can affect stability control, ABS and trailer braking. Recall 24V-674 covers certain 2023 and 2024 Tahoes whose brake module may not show a warning when brake fluid is low. Each fix is free software, done by a dealer or, for some, over the air.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for each recall, check the software update history, check the brake fluid level, and road test steering effort and braking.

Several recalls cover seat belts and seats on 2021 Tahoes. Front seat bolts may not have been put back after a factory repair (20V-735). The front center seat belt bracket may not be secured (20V-792). The wrong bolts may hold some seat belts (20V-811). Third row outboard belts may be trapped and damaged (21V-190). The second row center buckle may be stuck under trim (21V-210). Recall 22V-617 covers certain 2021 and 2022 Tahoes with a third row belt buckle rivet that may be formed wrong.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for each recall, pull out and latch every seat belt in all three rows, and check that the front seats do not move or rock.

NHTSA recall 21V-064 covers certain 2021 Tahoes whose fuel tank may be missing adhesive between its layers, which can leak fuel. Dealers replace the tank. Recall 25V-619 covers certain 2021, 2023 and 2024 Tahoes with the diesel whose original tank may have been swapped for the wrong one, which can leak in a rollover. Dealers check and replace it if needed.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for both recalls, smell for fuel, and look at the tank and lines from underneath.

Each year has its own guide. The engines, the transmission, and what changed that year.
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.
