Engine bearing and timing belt recallsCostly

NHTSA recall 23V-751 covers certain 2018 and 2019 Odysseys. A manufacturing error can make an engine connecting rod bearing wear and seize, damaging the engine. The engine may run poorly or stall, which raises the risk of a fire, crash or injury. Dealers inspect and repair, or replace the engine as needed, free. Recall 19V-298 covers certain 2019 Odysseys whose timing belt teeth may separate and stall the engine. Dealers replace the belt and any engine parts it damaged, free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for open recalls, listen for knocking at idle and on the road test, scan for codes, and read the records for engine work.

Fuel injector warranty extensionVerify

Honda extended the warranty on the fuel injectors for some 2018 and 2019 Odysseys. The check engine light may come on with catalyst, misfire or air fuel ratio codes (P0420, P0430, P0300 to P0306, P219A or P219B). Coverage runs 10 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and covers later owners. Some 2018 vans may also need an engine and transmission software update under the same extension.

WE CHECK We scan for misfire and catalyst codes, feel for rough running on the road test, and work out how much of the 10 year or 150,000 mile coverage is left.

Transmission and Park recallSafety

NHTSA recall 19V-299 covers certain 2018 and 2019 Odysseys. Loose battery terminals or a weak battery can make the transmission computer reboot and shift into Park, which can damage the parking rod. A damaged rod can let the van roll when parked. Dealers secure the battery terminals, update the software and check the parking rod, free. Separately, Honda bulletin 19-124 covers harsh or jerky upshifts and code P0716 on 2018 and 2019 LX, EX and EX-L vans with the 9-speed, fixed by a software update.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for an open recall, check the battery and its terminals, test that Park holds on a slope, and road test for harsh shifts.

2023 to 2024 steering rackSafety

NHTSA recall 24V-114 covers certain 2023 and 2024 Odysseys. The steering gear box may not have been tightened properly, so water can get in and corrode the gears. Binding steering gears can cause a loss of steering control. Dealers replace the electric power steering rack for free.

Automatic braking and lane complaintsCommon

NHTSA's complaint file shows many complaints coded to forward collision avoidance (201 for 2018, 234 for 2019 and 182 for 2020) and to lane departure (139, 165 and 126). We found no recall or NHTSA investigation for the Odyssey's driver aids in what we opened.

WE CHECK We road test with the driver aids on, note any braking or steering input with nothing there, and scan the safety systems for codes.

Common service bulletins (TSBs)

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:

Engine & DrivabilityWe check

Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.

Power Train · AutomaticWe check

Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.

Electrical & BodyWe check

Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.

Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.
