Theft risk on cars without an immobilizerVerify

Some 2021 and 2022 Elantras were built without an engine immobilizer. Hyundai says immobilizers became standard on all Hyundais built from November 2021, and that cars with a push button start or an immobilizer light in the cluster have one. Cars without one were targeted by a theft method spread on social media. Hyundai's free Campaign 993 adds anti-theft software and window decals, and after the update the key fob must be used to lock the car and arm it. Hyundai now also offers a free zinc reinforced ignition cylinder protector on request through March 31, 2027 for eligible cars.

WE CHECK We note whether the car has a turn key or push button start and an immobilizer light, check the VIN for open Campaign 993, look at the ignition cylinder and steering column for damage, and ask for the campaign records.

Seat belt pretensionersSafety

Several recalls cover front seat belt pretensioners on 2021 and 2022 Elantras and Elantra Hybrids that may explode when they fire in a crash and throw metal pieces. Recalls 21V-796, 22V-123 and 22V-218 were replaced by recall 22V-354, which covers certain 2021 and 2022 Elantras and Elantra Hybrids. Dealers secure the pretensioners with a cap. Hyundai says cars fixed under the earlier recalls still need the 22V-354 fix. Seat belts were a top complaint area for 2021 (27 complaints) and 2022 (29).

WE CHECK We check the VIN for recall 22V-354 in particular, pull out and latch both front belts, and look at the records for the cap repair.

Elantra N transmission and fuel pumpSafety

NHTSA recall 22V-746 covers certain 2022 Elantra N cars. If the transmission oil pump fails, the backup limp mode may not work, which can cause a full loss of drive power. Dealers inspect and replace the transmission as needed and update its software. Recall 24V-528 covers certain 2022 and 2023 Elantra N cars whose fuel pump may fail and cut power. Dealers update the engine software and replace the pump as needed. Hyundai also extended the warranty on the high pressure fuel pump for 2022 and 2023 Elantra N cars to 15 years or 150,000 miles, for original and later owners, for a valve fault that can cut power at low speed and set code P0088.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for both recalls, scan the engine and transmission for codes including P0088, road test the dual clutch transmission, and read the records for track use.

Hybrid creeping and cruise controlSafety

NHTSA recall 23V-589 covers certain 2021 to 2023 Elantra Hybrids. A motor control software error can make the car accelerate after the brake pedal is released. Dealers update the software for free. Separately, Hyundai campaign 25-01-003H covers certain 2021 to 2023 Elantra Hybrids whose cruise control set speed can rise without the driver doing anything, and dealers update the hybrid control unit.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for the recall and the campaign, and on the road test we check that the car holds still when the brake is released and that cruise control holds its set speed.

2024 Hybrid power control unitSafety

NHTSA recall 26V-308 covers certain 2024 to 2026 Elantra Hybrids. The hybrid power control unit can overheat, which raises the risk of a fire. Dealers update its software for free. Owner letters went out in July 2026, so many cars may still be open.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for the recall and, if it is open, tell you to park the car outside until a dealer fixes it.

2024 EGR valve loss of powerSafety

NHTSA recall 24V-308 covers certain 2024 Elantras. A short circuit in the exhaust gas recirculation valve can cause a loss of drive power. Dealers replace the valve for free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for the recall, scan for engine codes, and road test for hesitation or loss of power.

Rearview cameraSafety

NHTSA recall 24V-879 covers certain 2021 and 2022 Elantras and Elantra Hybrids and 2022 Elantra N cars. A damaged circuit board can make the backup camera image fail to show. Dealers replace the camera for free.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for the recall and shift into reverse several times to watch the camera image.

Air bag, seat and windshield recallsSafety

NHTSA recall 22V-632 covers certain 2022 Elantra N and 2022 and 2023 Elantra cars whose driver air bag emblem may come off when the bag deploys, and dealers replace the air bag. Recall 21V-302 covers certain 2021 Elantras whose front seat back recliners may be poorly welded, and dealers inspect and replace the seat back frame as needed. Recall 21V-00M covers certain 2021 Elantras whose windshield may not be bonded right and could come loose in a crash. Dealers remove and reinstall it.

WE CHECK We check the VIN for each recall, confirm the air bag light works at startup, rock both front seat backs, and look at the windshield edges for poor sealing.

Horn warranty extensionVerify

Hyundai extended the warranty on the horn for certain 2021 to 2025 Elantras, 2022 to 2025 Elantra N cars and 2021 to 2025 Elantra Hybrids because the horn can stop working. Coverage is 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original delivery date and passes to later owners.

WE CHECK We test the horn and tell you how much of the 10 year or 120,000 mile coverage is left from the in service date and mileage.

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:

Engine & DrivabilityWe check

Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.

Power Train · AutomaticWe check

Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.

Electrical & BodyWe check

Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.

Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.
