Toyota launched this generation as the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, then brought out the all new sedan for 2020. A 2019 Corolla sedan is the previous generation, with different engines and recalls.

WE CHECK We confirm the body style and generation from the VIN and the car itself, so the recall check and the inspection match the car you are buying.

Coolant valve leakCommon

Toyota's Customer Support Program 24TE04 covers a small coolant leak from a flow shut off valve on certain 2020 and 2021 Corollas and 2019 to 2021 Corolla hatchbacks. It can bring up an Engine Maintenance Required message or make the A/C work poorly. Toyota says the extra coverage runs 10 years from first use or 100,000 miles. NHTSA's complaint file for the 2020 Corolla lists 108 complaints coded to the engine as of September 2026.

WE CHECK We look for coolant residue, check the coolant level, scan for codes and test A/C output. We note if the valve was already replaced.

Every Corolla Hybrid in this generation is a 2020 or newer model, so Toyota's 10 year or 150,000 mile hybrid battery warranty applies, and it passes to later owners. Other hybrid parts keep 8 years or 100,000 miles.

WE CHECK We confirm the in service date and mileage, scan the hybrid system for stored codes, and watch the hybrid system on the road test.

Common service bulletins (TSBs)

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:

Engine & DrivabilityWe check

Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.

Power Train · AutomaticWe check

Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.

Electrical & BodyWe check

Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.

Bulletins stay with the maker, so we pull the current list for this exact vehicle during the inspection and tell you what applies.

Common questions
Is a 2019 Corolla the new or old generation?
It depends on the body. The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is the new generation. The 2019 Corolla sedan is the older model. The new sedan started with the 2020 model year.
Does the Corolla have a CVT?
Yes. Gas Corollas in this generation use a CVT. The 2.0L cars use Toyota's Dynamic Shift CVT, which has a real first gear for starting off. Some models were offered with a 6-speed manual.
Which Corolla has all wheel drive?
All wheel drive came to the Corolla Hybrid for the 2023 model year, as the LE AWD and SE AWD trims. Check the trim badge and the window sticker or VIN decode to confirm.
Is the Corolla Hybrid battery still under warranty?
Toyota covers the hybrid battery on 2020 and newer hybrids for 10 years or 150,000 miles, and it transfers to later owners. Every Corolla Hybrid in this generation is a 2020 or newer model.
What does Engine Maintenance Required mean on a Corolla?
On certain 2019 to 2021 Corollas it can come from a small coolant leak at a flow shut off valve. Toyota covers that repair under Customer Support Program 24TE04 for 10 years or 100,000 miles. A dealer can check the VIN.
What changed on the 2023 Corolla?
Toyota dropped the 1.8L gas engine, so every gas Corolla got the 2.0L. The hybrid got more power and optional AWD, and all models got Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 and a new 8 inch touchscreen.
How do I check a Corolla for open recalls?
Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a Toyota dealer. We run the VIN on every inspection. Watch for the fuel pump, air bag and steering shaft recalls.
