Toyota Tacoma Pre Purchase Inspection Guide
Frame rust, cracked leaf springs, and hard off-road use.

The Tacoma holds its value better than almost any truck, so a bad one still asks a high price.
Rust and off-road abuse are what separate a good one from an expensive mistake.

- 4.0L V6
Trucks from salt states can rust the frame badly. Toyota ran a frame inspection and replacement campaign on many of these years.
WE CHECK We go underneath and check the frame rails, crossmembers, and spring hangers for scaling and holes.

Rear leaf springs can crack on the 2005–2010 trucks. There was a recall — a broken leaf can damage the fuel tank.
WE CHECK We inspect each leaf pack for cracks and check the recall status.
Tacomas get used hard. Lifts, big tires, and trail damage are common.
WE CHECK We check lift quality, look for skid plate and underbody damage, and check for bent parts.
The automatic can shudder or shift oddly if the fluid was never serviced.
WE CHECK We road test every gear and check the fluid and records.
Diff and driveline leaks show up on hard-worked trucks.
WE CHECK We check for leaks at the diff, transfer case, and seals.

Tacomas hold value, so a worn-out truck can still be priced like a good one.
WE CHECK We give you the real condition so you can price it right or walk.
- Get underneath and check the frame — this is the big one

Each year has its own guide — the engines, the transmission, and what changed that year.
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker — we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
