Jeep Wrangler Inspection Guide
Death wobble, engine ticks, rust, and lift-kit quality.
The JK Wrangler is built to go off-road, so abuse is common.
We check the front end, the engine, and how any lift was done.
- 3.8L V6 (2007β2011)
- 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2012β2018)
A worn front end can cause violent steering shake (death wobble).
WE CHECK We check the track bar, ball joints, and steering parts for play.
Early 3.6 Pentastar engines (2012β2013) had cylinder-head issues causing a tick and misfire on cylinder 3.
WE CHECK We listen for a tick and scan for a cylinder-3 misfire.
The older 3.8 V6 can tick and leak oil.
WE CHECK We check for leaks and listen at idle.
Wranglers rust at the frame, especially salt states.
WE CHECK We inspect the frame and body mounts for rust.
Many are lifted and run hard off-road.
WE CHECK We check lift-kit quality and look for off-road damage.
- Check the front end for death-wobble parts
- Listen for a 3.6 cylinder-3 tick (2012β2013)
- Inspect the frame for rust
- Judge lift quality and off-road wear
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker β we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
