Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Inspection Guide
AFM lifter collapse, brake-line rust, and 8-speed shudder.
The Silverado 1500 is a strong work truck, with a couple of known weak spots.
The V8's cylinder-deactivation (AFM) is the one to watch most.
- 4.3L V6
- 5.3L V8 (AFM)
- 6.2L V8 (AFM)
The V8's cylinder-deactivation (AFM) can collapse a lifter and damage the cam. It causes a tick or misfire.
WE CHECK We listen for a tick and scan for misfire/cylinder-deactivation codes.
Salt-state trucks corrode brake and fuel lines.
WE CHECK We inspect the lines underneath for rust and scaling.
2015+ 8-speed automatics can shudder from old fluid.
WE CHECK We road test and feel for shudder; we check fluid condition.
The AC condenser can leak and stop cooling.
WE CHECK We test the AC and check for cooling performance.
Direct-injection engines can build carbon over time.
WE CHECK We check idle quality and scan for misfires.
- Listen for an AFM lifter tick on the V8
- Check brake lines on salt-state trucks
- Road test the 8-speed for shudder
- Scan for misfire and cylinder codes
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker β we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
