BMW 3-Series Inspection Guide
N20 timing chain, oil-filter housing leaks, and electronics.
The F30 3-Series is fun to drive, but it needs care and has known leaks.
Service history matters a lot on these cars. We check it closely.
- 2.0L turbo (N20/N26)
- 3.0L turbo (N55)
- 2.0L diesel
Early N20/N26 engines (mainly 2012β2015) can stretch or fail the timing chain.

The valve-cover gasket weeps oil over time.
WE CHECK We check the valve cover for seepage.
The electric water pump can fail and overheat the engine.

Plastic charge pipes can crack; VANOS solenoids can fault.
WE CHECK We scan for boost and VANOS codes.
- Confirm timing-chain service on early N20 cars

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker β we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
