Toyota RAV4 Pre Purchase Inspection Guide
Early shift quality, seat belt recall, and underbody corrosion.
The RAV4 is one of the best-selling SUVs in the country, so there are always plenty for sale.
They hold value well, which means a tired one can still be priced like a good one.
- 2.5L 4-cyl
- 2.5L hybrid (2016+)
Some 2013 cars shift harshly or hunt between gears. Toyota reflashed many of them.
WE CHECK We road test through every gear and check whether the update was done.
Some 2013–2014 cars were recalled because a rear seat belt could be damaged in a crash.
WE CHECK We check the VIN for the recall and confirm the work was completed.
Salt-state cars corrode underneath, especially at the rear suspension.
WE CHECK We go underneath and check the subframe, arms, and brake lines.
Some later cars carry a fuel pump recall. A failed pump can stall the engine.
WE CHECK We check the VIN and ask about any stalling or hard starting.
The hybrid battery ages like any other. It is worth knowing its condition.
WE CHECK We scan the hybrid system for faults and check how it behaves in traffic.
The all-wheel-drive system needs fluid service that owners often skip.
WE CHECK We test the AWD on the road and check for leaks and service records.

Each year has its own guide — the engines, the transmission, and what changed that year.
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker — we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
