Nissan Rogue Pre Purchase Inspection Guide

CVT wear, emergency braking faults, and heavy fleet use.

The Rogue sells in huge numbers and is cheap to buy used. The transmission is why it is cheap.

Like the Altima, the CVT is the single most important thing to test on one of these.

Engines you may see
  • 2.5L 4-cyl
  • 2.0L hybrid (2017–2019)
Known problem areas — what we check
Costly Safety Common Verify
CVT wear and failureCostly

The CVT can shudder, whine, or slip. A replacement can cost close to what the car is worth.

WE CHECK We road test it cold and hot, feel for judder under light throttle, and scan the transmission.

CVT overheat on long climbsCostly

The CVT can overheat and drop into a reduced-power mode on hills or in heavy traffic.

WE CHECK We drive it long enough to build real heat, not just around the block.

Emergency braking faultsSafety

Some 2017–2018 cars brake hard on their own with nothing in the way. It was widely reported.

WE CHECK We ask the owner directly and check for stored faults in the driver assistance system.

CVT fluid service historyVerify

CVTs need fluid changes on time and most owners never do them.

WE CHECK We ask for records and check the fluid condition.

Battery drain and electricsCommon

Some cars have parasitic drains that kill batteries.

WE CHECK We test the battery and charging system and look for warning messages.

Fleet and rental wearVerify

Many Rogues were rental cars. The miles are hard miles.

WE CHECK We look for rental wear inside and check the service history.

Focus points
  • Road test the CVT long enough to get it hot
  • Feel for judder at light throttle around 30–45 mph
  • Ask about any surprise automatic braking
  • Ask for CVT fluid service records
  • Look for rental and fleet wear
Pre purchase inspection by year

Each year has its own guide — the engines, the transmission, and what changed that year.

Common service bulletins (TSBs)

A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:

Engine & Drivability18

Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.

Power Train · Automatic27

Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.

Electrical & Body150

Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.

Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker — we use the summaries to guide the inspection.

Common questions
Is the Rogue CVT a problem?
It is the known weak point. A healthy one is fine; a tired one is a very big bill. That is why we test it hot.
What is the automatic braking issue?
Some cars braked hard for no reason. We ask the owner and scan the system for faults.
Where do you inspect?
All 48 states.
Do you pull recalls?
Yes, plus service bulletins.
