Some 3.5 EcoBoost trucks rattle for 1–3 seconds on a cold start. It comes from the timing parts and cam phasers.
WE CHECK We cold-start it and listen. A rattle over a second is a red flag.
Early EcoBoost trucks can stumble or hit limp mode under hard boost in damp weather. Water builds in the intercooler.
WE CHECK We road test under load and feel for a misfire-like stumble.
Some 5.0 trucks burn a little oil between changes. Usually minor.
WE CHECK We check the oil level and ask the owner about it.
Harsh shifts and a 10-speed torque-converter shudder are reported on these automatics.
WE CHECK We drive every gear and feel for shudder at light throttle around 30–45 mph.
Trucks from salty states corrode brake lines and frames.
WE CHECK We inspect the lines and frame rails underneath for scaling or holes.
- Find the engine first (2.7/3.5 EcoBoost, 5.0, 3.3/3.7) — risks differ
- Cold-start it yourself for the rattle
- Scan for stored boost/misfire codes even with no light
- Check for heavy tow or plow use
- Verify aluminum body panels for past repair (2015+)
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker — we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
