Pre Purchase Inspection for 2014 Toyota Corolla
Early oil consumption, steering shaft clunk, and CVT behaviour. We check the known trouble spots before you pay.
Buying a 2014 Toyota Corolla? Smart move to check it first. The engine it has changes what matters most.
Transmission: CVT or 6-speed manual. All-new car. The CVT replaces the 4-speed — road test it properly.
- 1.8L 4-cyl
- 1.8L Valvematic
Some early 1.8L engines burn oil from worn piston rings. Toyota extended coverage on it at the time, but that has long run out.
WE CHECK We check the oil level and condition and ask how much it uses between changes.
Some 2009–2010 cars develop a clunk or knock from the steering intermediate shaft.
WE CHECK We turn the wheel lock to lock and feel for a knock through the column.
The later cars use a CVT. It should pull smoothly with no shudder or whine.
WE CHECK We road test it hot and scan the transmission for stored faults.
The water pump can weep coolant as these age.
WE CHECK We look for coolant staining and check the level and condition.
The AC can lose cooling and blower resistors fail.
WE CHECK We run the AC and test every fan speed.
Salt-state cars rust at the rear wheel arches and underbody.
WE CHECK We inspect the arches, sills, and underbody for scaling.
- Check oil use hard on 2009–2011 cars
- Feel for a steering shaft clunk lock to lock
- Road test the CVT hot on 2014 and later cars
- Look at the rear arches on salt-state cars
- Confirm any open recalls are closed
A TSB is a note the maker sends to dealers about a known fix. They are not recalls. We check the bulletins so we know what to look for:
Cold-start noise, drivability, and idle issues for this vehicle. We test for each.
Shift quality and transmission fluid updates. We drive every gear.
Locks, wipers, infotainment, and trim items. Small, but good to know.
Counts are pulled from NHTSA's public Manufacturer Communications file. Full bulletins stay with the maker — we use the summaries to guide the inspection.
