A Short History of the Automobile
From the first horseless carriages to today's computers on wheels — a quick look at how cars got here.
The car has a long, rich history. It went from a rare toy for the wealthy to something almost every family owns.
The early days
The first cars showed up in the late 1800s. They were slow, loud, and expensive. Most people still used horses.
Mass production
In the early 1900s, the moving assembly line changed everything. Cars got cheaper and faster to build. Now regular families could afford one.
The muscle and safety eras
By mid-century, cars got bigger and more powerful. Later, seat belts, airbags, and crash testing made them far safer.
Computers on wheels
Today's cars are full of computers. They watch the engine, the brakes, and dozens of systems. That's why a good scan tells you so much.
Knowing the history helps you understand what you're buying. An old classic and a new EV are both "cars," but they need very different checks.
